Statement by President, Sam Kane
Saturday 21 March 2020
It was 2,644 days ago that I joined the campaign to save and reopen Golden Square Pool – and in that time hundreds of volunteers have worked hard to transform a tired swimming pool into a vibrant community gathering space.
From health and wellbeing classes, learn to swim lessons, live music events, a Junior Volunteer Team, off season community events and more – our wonderful team have created a place that doesn’t exist elsewhere, and is so important to our future.
Just over 105,000 patrons have enjoyed what our team have done since 2013, and we couldn’t be more honoured to run this space and provide a resource for our community.
No more obvious to me has our pool’s value been than this week when our community came together to show council it needs to remain, after we learnt that a decision on whether to keep us open for a further four years was on this month’s council agenda.
Letters, emails, posts and more were sent from residents, describing why our pool was so important to them – “community hub”, “safe family friendly place” and “connection” just some of the hundreds of phrases used.
However, on Wednesday we learnt that such decision would be delayed for another three months. This would allow for further consultation to occur with wider stakeholders about the entire precinct, to allow questions to be answered, and, hopefully, see a plan for collaboration and the future developed.
While initially disappointed at a delay, I’ve since had many community members, patrons and volunteers get in touch and remind us to keep powering on.
So, just as we have over the past seven years, we will.
We’ll keep spreading our positive story, volunteers will start planning for next summer, we’ll keep developing new programs to engage our community, and we’ll keep planting and producing produce in our community garden – which next week will see us harvest our first batch of potatoes to hand over to Bendigo Foodshare, to help those most in need.
Out of all of this, and as our volunteers and patrons show me every day, is being positive, coming together, helping out and simply smiling can go a long way to making a difference to whatever challenge or problem – big or small.
And, at a time where there’s increased uncertainty in our city and world, it’s that kindness, and always reminding each other of community, that will help us get through and rise above.

We’ve been here before. Read about the last campaign to keep Golden Square Pool open. Since then we have gone from strength to strength. We have passed every test that City of Greater Bendigo has placed before us – and proven we have a viable model for this space, seen continued patronage growth, and increased members and volunteers.
On Wednesday 20 February 2018 Council voted unanimously to extend the pool lease for a further two years. An alternative motion was put forward by Lockwood Ward Councillor Jennifer Alden with the future of the pool revisited after the 2019/2020 season.
Addressing jubilant supporters after the decision was announced, then President Bernadette Wright thanked them for the respectful approach to sending a clear message to council.
"The journey has not ended as we have two short years to prove again our viability to the City. We must stick together, be strategic and thoughtful in our approach and also fulfil the infrastructure works to bring us up to date. We will need all of you to give your support in many ways. We must hold firm and keep our eye on the end goal which is to keep our pool open for many years to come.
" Cr Alden said “It (pool) is the beating heart of the suburb, let’s make it the healthy heart of Golden Square.” Extending the lease will allow council the opportunity to gauge whether Golden Square Pool can continue to attract patrons after the opening of Gurri Wanyarra later in 2018.

MEDIA RELEASE
CITY OF GREATER BENDIGO RECOMMENDS TO CLOSE GOLDEN SQUARE POOL
Golden Square Pool Committee of Management have today launched their Let’s Keep it Open campaign, following City of Greater Bendigo’s recommendation to close the facility in June 2018.
Under the City’s proposal set to be voted upon at next Wednesday’s council meeting, councillors have been recommended to vote to close the one-hundred year old swimming pool, which was first saved following a strong community campaign in 2012/2013. The City’s rationale for this recommendation is their claim that the municipality has an overprovision of aquatic facilities.
The Golden Square Pool Committee of Management argue that this recommendation has not taken into account the population growth that has already occurred within Golden Square in line with the City’s support for medium to high density housing. Furthermore, it does not acknowledge future population growth in the suburb, and that Golden Square is currently significantly under-resourced in relation to parks and recreational areas.
The Committee of Management contend that any decision by the City in relation to the pool should take into consideration the broader benefits the Golden Square Pool provides, in particular those relating to health and wellbeing. These include:
• Community connectedness and social cohesion
• A place for community togetherness
• A welcome and inclusive environment for all
• A facility for families and other groups to come together in a safe and secure area
Over the past five years, Golden Square Pool has welcomed 66,000 patrons through the gates, with significant growth occurring each year.
Golden Square Pool President Bernadette Wright urged residents to contact their local councillors, and ask them to vote against the recommendation.
“We need the community’s support to help us keep our pool.”

Council Manager of Active and Healthy Communities, Lincoln Fitzgerald recommends to Council that Golden Square Pool be closed at the end of the current lease due to the “over provision of aquatic spaces in the City of Greater Bendigo”. Councillors will vote on this motion on 21 February 2018. This item is 3.2 on the Council Agenda.

City of Greater Bendigo Aquatic Facilities Strategy 2010 which is used in the recommendations to Council and yet states: “Bendigo is the fastest growing municipality in Victoria, and we need to meet demand for facilities in key growth centres including to the south: Kangaroo Flat, Golden Square and Big Hill”. Also it should be remembered that the “over provision of aquatic services” for Bendigo the Council refers to includes Elmore, Goornong, Heathcote, Raywood and Marong.
