About Us
In 2012 City of Greater Bendigo Council voted to close the Golden Square Pool citing falling attendance numbers and high maintenance costs. Another reason given was the future indoor aquatic centre planned for Kangaroo Flat.

A dedicated team of locals formed the “Save Golden Square Pool” group and by April 2013 had formed a committee and gained management of the pool. With the help of many volunteers, the committee was able to undertake a refurbishment of the pool at a fraction of the $292,000 originally quoted by Council.

After much hard work the new Golden Square Pool opened on Saturday 30 November 2013. The successful season saw more than 12,000 people pass through the gates by the end of March 2014. 2014/2015 was a positive season despite a generally cooler summer.
The 2015/2016 season saw numbers again increase and numerous improvements were made to the pool and grounds.
Over subsequent seasons, Golden Square Pool has developed a reputation as a family-friendly pool with a welcoming atmosphere and strong community connections. The inviting surrounds include BBQ, shaded areas, clean change rooms with hot water, seating, green grass, bike parking and a well-stocked kiosk. A strong events calendar and a comprehensive series of health and lifestyle programs help set this facility apart from others. The water quality is consistently of a high standard and lifeguards are well-trained to ensure that safety of all patrons is the highest priority.
In 2018, Council voted to extend the pool lease for a further two years until June 2020 to allow Council to gauge whether Golden Square Pool would still attract patrons after the opening of Gurri Wanyarra. The following two seasons saw a steady increase in patronage, volunteers and memberships.
In March 2020, a recommendation regarding the pool’s future went before Council but an amendment saw the matter delayed for three months to allow other groups involved with the Golden Square Recreation Reserve to be involved in talks.

Volunteers.
Golden Square Pool relies on a solid, consistent volunteer base. Volunteers maintain the grounds, work in the kiosk, attend fundraising events and run the Committee of Management. New volunteers are always welcome. Contact us for more information about joining the Volunteer Team.
